Objective

Create a working LAN, configure the devices, and verify that data actually travels from one end to the other.

Theory & concepts

A small network needs end devices, a way to connect them, and correct addressing. In this laboratory you will place two PCs and a switch, connect them with links, assign each interface an IP address and subnet mask from the same subnet, and then send a packet between them.

Simple two-PC LAN through a switch

PC1: 192.168.1.10 / 255.255.255.0
PC2: 192.168.1.20 / 255.255.255.0
Gateway: not required inside a single subnet

Instructions

1Drag two PC devices and one switch onto the canvas.
2Connect each PC to the switch with an Ethernet link.
3Open each device's configuration and assign the IP addresses above.
4Select PC1, choose the ping command, and target PC2.
5Watch the packet leave PC1, cross the switch, and reach PC2.
6Change PC2's IP to a different subnet and re-test; observe the failure and explain it.

Tasks

Build the topology
Two PCs and a switch, correctly linked.
Configure addressing
Assign IP/mask so both PCs are on 192.168.1.0/24.
Verify connectivity
Ping from PC1 to PC2 and observe the packet path.
Introduce a fault
Move PC2 to 192.168.2.20 and explain why the ping now fails.

Self-check

Topology contains the required devices and links.
All interfaces have valid, consistent IP configuration.
Connectivity is verified and the packet path is explained.
The student explains why a cross-subnet ping fails without a router.
