The Bombe hunts for the Enigma daily key by trying rotor positions at machine speed. A crib (a guessed plaintext fragment) is wired up as a menu on the commutator panels; the drum columns step through the 26³ rotor positions and the test register signals a contradiction. Only the correct setting lets the circuit complete.
